The student produces a piece of writing exploring an issue of least 350 words in length.

In that piece, the student:

  • presents information from sources as well as ideas and viewpoints
  • structures their writing appropriately
  • ensures that vocabulary selection, syntax, stylistic features and written text conventions (including spelling, punctuation, grammar) are appropriate.
  •  uses written text conventions without intrusive error patterns, such as a pattern of errors in syntax (e.g. sentence fragments, where structures are not used intentionally; and ‘run on’ syntax); or a pattern of other significant errors (e.g. mixed tense sequences, mis‑capitalisation, spelling errors).

The student:

As for achievement, plus:

  • develops and structures their writing a generally credible and connected way.
  • selects and links language features to the intended purpose and audience.
  • uses text conventions accurately so that the writing contains only minor errors.

The student:

As for merit, plus:

  • develops and structures their writing in a compelling and well-organised way. The student shows a perceptive understanding, making clear points and showing some insight or originality in thought or interpretation.
  • uses language features, vocabulary selection, distinctive personal voice, dimensions or viewpoints in an original and sustained way.
  • uses text conventions accurately so that the writing contains only minor errors.
