Description
This module is divided into five parts, each relating to a different performance criterion. Each part describes the skill group it covers and provides examples of how the skills are applied to texts. Students are then asked to apply the skills themselves in a number of exercises.
Once competence is demonstrated, the teacher will invite the student to move on to the next part and study another skill group.
When all the skills have been covered, one by one, students are given the opportunity to apply them as a group. This final exercise mirrors that of the assessment and should indicate any areas of weakness. At this point students can be directed back to the relevant part(s) to review the skill(s) causing concern.
Introduction
This unit covers a number of basic reading skills essential to understanding text. These are skills that experienced and 'first language' readers will often take for granted, but new or second language readers will need to be introduced to them.
The purposes of the reading and the information sought are all 'real world' examples using a wide range of common, familiar texts - these should interest and challenge all students.
Students are encouraged to work independently, checking back with the teacher at regular intervals. Be generous with your praise and encouragement and watchful for areas of weakness where additional tuition may be required.
