Introduction
After reading The Whole of the Moon by Duncan Stewart
, students explore and research how cancer sufferers and their families live with child cancer. Students present their research findings as reports.
This unit is not designed as a simple 'book study.' The aim is to empower the students with the knowledge of what this widely feared yet largely misunderstood illness is, and how people deal with it. It is also designed to encourage students and teachers into the world of the Internet, and how to use it as a valuable research tool.
Important teacher note
Due to the nature of the content, some teachers may feel it is inappropriate for their class to limit their research purely to the theme of cancer. Students may explore extensions to this theme: their fears, dealing with challenges, other accidents or illnesses, or another appropriate variation.
Conditions:
This activity requires a mixture of class and homework activity. Students should collect most information out of class but use class time to process the information and develop their reports.
Teachers are directed to the Assessment Notes contained in AS90060 (English 1.9)
and in particular to Assessment Note 4 in regard to authenticity of student work and performance, which is of particular importance when homework activity is included. As much of the information will be collected out of class, teachers should ensure that they see information from various sources such as notes from interviews or texts or photocopies used.
Students should use the headings and suggested layout for their research plans, reports and evaluations.
