- The letter is addressed to the intended person, and the purpose of the letter is stated at or near the beginning.
- The information presented is accurate, clear, relevant, and ordered in a sequence which fits the context.
- Information is presented so that the content, vocabulary, and tone fit the context, subject matter, and audience.
- Punctuation is accurate in terms of fullstops, capital letters, and commas.
- Spelling is accurate at least 90% of the time.
- A formal letter format is followed, and the form of address used fits the context and the relationship between writer and receiver.

Introduction
This unit is aimed at preparing students for one of the communication unit standards which has been designated for the minimum 8 literacy credits for NCEA. The students are required to write two formal letters and one formal email. The unit has been based around the topic of travel and all correspondence relates to this topic.
