Achievement Standard Being Assessed

Achievement Criteria

AS90052 (English 1.1): Produce creative writing
  • Express idea(s) with detail in a piece of writing.
  • Use a writing style appropriate to audience, purpose and text type.
  • Structure material in a way that is appropriate to audience, purpose and text type.
  • Use writing conventions without intrusive errors.

Guidelines for use

Students will develop a piece of writing describing their memory of a journey they have taken.

Conditions

This activity should be worked on in the classroom under teacher supervision to ensure authenticity. Teachers may guide students actively through the initial exercise helping them to identify techniques mentioned. Teachers may show how the techniques used in the exemplars can be applied to students' own writing.

Between drafts, teachers can advise students that their writing may need further work on ideas, language, structure or accuracy in spelling, punctuation or paragraphing but not correct errors. Students should have access to dictionaries to check their writing. Word processing is acceptable providing it is done under teacher supervision.

Teachers are directed to the Assessment Notes contained in the Achievement Standard especially Note 6: Students should have several opportunities during the year to develop their writing skills in a range of poetic genre and should be encouraged to submit at least TWO pieces of writing for internal assessment. The achievement standard will be awarded at the level of the best piece of writing. Exercises which are modelled with the students cannot be used as writing pieces for submission, however they may be used as starting points for further work.

Possible local adaptation

Where local adaptations are made, teachers and schools should ensure that they have:

  • checked that the adapted assessment validly assesses the standard;
  • checked the copyright status of any material imported into the assessment resource;
  • complied with all internal and external quality assurance requirements.

Learning task 1

Learning task 2

Student instructions

In this activity you will develop a piece of writing of at least 300 words where you describe your memories of a journey you have taken. Your writing will build a picture of your experience for the reader suitable for publication.

Before you begin writing, you will look at exemplars of student writing and focus on techniques you could use to develop your own writing effectively.

You will be assessed on

  • how well you express and develop your ideas
  • your ability to use a writing style that is appropriate to the task
  • how well you organise your material
  • your accuracy in spelling, punctuation and paragraphing.

Assessment

See the schedule (RTF 16KB) which is also linked to the exemplars.
