This unit explores Pacific Islands writers' quest to tell their stories and explore issues of identity. The exploration is based on close reading of novels, poems, short stories and non-fiction.

The Shawshank Redemption
This unit focuses upon the 'literary' (plot, character, themes) and technical aspects of the film through storyboarding and scene analysis. Essay writing, drawing the literary and technical aspects of the film together, is also introduced and used as the main form of assessment. This may be used to prepare students for the external assessment of AS90379 (English 2.5): View/listen to, study and analyse a visual or oral text.

A unit focusing students on the directorial decisions needed in the production of the play. Innocence Imagination Obsession - Heavenly Creatures
This unit centres on the film Heavenly Creatures and the play Daughters of Heaven. The aim is to stimulate students to respond to the controversial ideas and analyse how they are presented in the two textsThe unit culminates in students preparing and delivering presentations to the class about important aspects of the film and/or the play. This unit focuses on traditional and modern Māori role models. Students research a role model from their own whakapapa and orally present a "This Is Your Life" portfolio about that person. Ride the waves through the mists of time to the modern world exploring the novel, The Whalerider. This unit provides opportunities for personal reading, design and production of a 3D Wharenui, production of a poetic writing portfolio linked to ideas in the novel and other reading experiences. Theme Study: Unit Standard 8823
Students complete their own investigations into a selected theme incorporating six texts. The texts could include those studied in class and texts they have selected. As they complete their investigations, students are guided by examples from various theme studies. Their theme studies can be assessed for unit standard 8823 Investigate a theme across an inclusive range of selected texts.
In My View: Unit Standard 8825
Students develop written arguments exploring issues that interest them. Before they begin writing, they examine techniques they could use to develop their arguments effectively. Their writing can be assessed for unit standard 8825 Produce transactional written text in complex forms as one of the three pieces required for this standard.
Novel Ideas: Unit Standard 8825
Students read a novel paying attention to how important ideas are developed. After studying exemplars showing how to develop and structure their writing, students write essays about how one important idea is developed in a novel. Their writing can be assessed for unit standard 8825 Produce transactional written text in complex forms as one of the three pieces required for this standard.
Research Report: Unit Standard 8825
Students develop their research reports as pieces of transactional writing. They will have already completed the reports as part of their work towards the level 2 research achievement standard AS90381 Investigate a language or literature topic and present information in written form. Before they begin writing, students examine techniques they could use to develop their report writing effectively. Their writing can be assessed for unit standard 8825 Produce transactional written text in complex forms as one of the three pieces required for this standard.
Adolescence to Adulthood: Unit Standard 12419
This Level 2 task allows students to work towards assessment for Unit Standard 12419 Read poetic written text closely. The students work through a series of activities, exploring the journey from childhood to adulthood in three New Zealand short stories, to co-construct exemplar responses before completing a summative assessment.
Growing Up: Unit Standard 12420
Students read non fiction texts in which the writers describe experiences of growing up. After studying close reading exemplars, they complete a close reading activity on the text provided. Their close reading work can be assessed for unit standard 12420 Read transactional text closely. This activity assesses one of the two close readings required for unit standard 12420.
On Location: Unit Standard 12420
Students read non fiction texts in which the writers develop strong senses of the locations or experiences they describe. After studying close reading exemplars, they complete a close reading activity on the text provided. Their close reading work can be assessed for unit standard 12420 Read transactional text closely. This activity assesses one of the two close readings required for unit standard 12420.
Heroes: Documentary Film Making
Students view and analyse When We Were Kings (or another documentary film) and produce a short documentary sequence about a person. This may be used to assess unit standard 12425: Present Moving Images Combining Verbal and Visual Features.
