Learning task 2: Language features

Giving long lists of features may or may not help most students. The Chinese proverb "I hear I forget, I see I remember, I do I understand" is the key to understanding language features and a suggested method of doing this follows:

Divide students into groups and have each group take responsibility for an aspect (for example sound devices, figurative devices, oratorical features). Have them look for examples and effects of these in a videoed speech - usually a politician's election speech. Your local MP could provide a transcript or videotape of their maiden speech to parliament.
