Introduction
This unit targets students who have an interest in the Pacific Islands. The main islands focused on in this unit are Samoa and Tonga. The anthology Lali - a Pacific Island Anthology by Albert Wendt has literature from other islands which students are encouraged to read and respond to. The main aim of this unit is to encourage students who have ancestry from the Pacific to be aware that there are writers with whom they have a common bond.
This unit was designed to target Pacific Islands students, especially New Zealand born Pacific Islands students. However, this should not stop teachers from using the unit for all students. Through the literature students will explore issues and themes being debated in the Pacific Islands, especially the search for identity.
