This achievement standard is derived from oral language achievement objectives up to and including Level 7: using texts, processing information, thinking critically.
Guidelines for use
Students prepare and deliver a This Is Your Life style presentation on a selected role model. To prepare for this presentation students investigate contemporary and traditional Māori role models and research their own whakapapa for role models.
This activity is designed primarily for Māori students of English but can easily be adapted for students from other backgrounds. A positive outcome should be the acknowledgement of successful Māori role models and raising of self-esteem by Māori students after they discover their own links to people of note. It is also informative for students from other backgrounds to be aware of the accomplishments of Māori. Making links with the community is important as are subsequent activities that incorporate Māori skills and knowledge. Reference to unfamiliar words and tikanga can be found in the glossary.
This activity can be used to generate speeches required for Manu Kōrero.
Conditions
This activity requires both classroom and homework time.
Students should be given class time to peer critique and rehearse their presentations with sufficient homework time to follow up the suggestions made, ready for the final delivery in class.
