Guidelines for use
This activity assesses one of the two close readings required for unit standard 12420. Students will develop close readings based on a provided text that describes the experience of being in a certain place or environment. Other texts with a similar focus could also be included as material for second close reading activities.
Conditions
Teachers must be satisfied that the close reading work is the student's. Students should complete close reading activities in class. If the close reading activity is to be used for summative assessment, teachers should ensure that the extent of teacher input does not compromise assessment validity; in other words, the work is the student's, not the teacher's.
Teachers may guide students actively through the initial tasks. When completing close reading activities for summative assessment, students can compare their answers to those in the initial tasks to ensure that their close reading answers are at an appropriate level.
Students should have several opportunities during the year to develop their close reading skills.
Resource requirements
Possible local adaptation
Where local adaptations are made, teachers and schools should ensure that they have:
- checked that the adapted assessment validly assesses the standard;
- checked the copyright status of any material imported into the assessment resource;
- complied with all internal and external quality assurance requirements.

Teaching and learning activities
Select and adapt these learning activities to best meet the needs of your students, and to fit the time available:
Student instructions
In this activity you will read texts where the experiences of the places or environments described are developed and explored. After studying close reading exemplars, you will complete a first close reading activity on the text provided.
Before you begin this activity, you will read a number of non fiction texts where writers develop strong senses of the locations or experiences they describe. A second close reading activity could be based on a text extract from one or more of these readings.
One or more of these texts used as background reading may also be appropriate to include in your individual wide reading programme [Level 2 unit standard 12905
Read an inclusive variety of written and record the reading experience].
You will be assessed on how well you:
- explain one main idea in the text, supported by a specific reference from the text
- analyse the significance of a main idea [significance could be linked to a social, historical, physical, political or personal context], supported by a specific reference from the text
- describe the effects of three language features, using correct terminology
- identify and analyse one way the text is shaped [eg: through structure or narrative technique], supported by a specific reference from the text.
Your teacher will guide you on how much time you have for this task.
Learning task 1: Reading on Location
Learning task 2: A Subterranean Experience
Learning task 3: Comparing Exemplars

See the
assessment (RTF 44KB)
which is also linked to the exemplars on Resource B.
Successful completion of this task will fulfil part of the range statement [one of two close readings] for the level 2 Unit standard 12420: Read transactional text closely.
Other texts [or text extracts] with a similar focus selected for Learning task 1 could also be included as material for a second close reading activity to complete the range statement for this unit standard. The questions in Completing a Close Reading could be adapted as required. A second close reading activity could also be completed using the Growing Up
unit.
