Guidelines for use
This activity provides teaching and learning activities for Unit Standard 12427
Read closely and evaluate the effectiveness of poetic written texts, based on a study of William Shakespeare's Othello.
It is assumed that the class will have read the entire play and that teachers have previously provided discussion opportunities and notes covering theme, character, structure, setting and so on.
Students will work in groups to complete each teaching and learning activity. Group responses may be photocopied for future reference and to be shared with other groups as study notes.
This activity also provides an example of a summative assessment task for ONE text in the range for element 1. The text is Shakespearean drama. A further two texts must be completed to achieve this standard. Please note special note 4 in the standard regarding selecting texts "with established critical reputations...gender balance and ... a range of cultural perspectives" The tasks may be adapted to suit texts studied.
The tasks in this unit may be used for preparation for Achievement Standard 90722
Respond critically to Shakespearean drama studied and Unit Standard 12428
Read closely and evaluate the effectiveness of transactional written text (literary criticism)
Conditions
Teachers will actively guide students through the FOUR teaching and learning tasks. However, when students attempt the close reading summative assessment task, teachers must ensure that teacher input, advice and direction does not compromise the validity of the assessment. Teachers must be able to verify that the work is wholly the students'.
The teaching and learning tasks are to be completed in class and as homework. Three weeks are suggested.
The summative assessment task is to be completed in class under teacher supervision. Teachers must ensure that the class has NOT previously studied the assessment extract in depth.
