Learning task 3: The Perfect Segue - Leaping into Research
The Perfect Segue - Leaping into Research 3.7
Complete Independent Research on a Literature Topic and present findings in written form.
In search of significant Themes in the Short Stories.
Research skills are skills you will use often in your work during the year. Here is an opportunity to apply the skills you have learnt during the year.
You have read short stories by Eudora Welty, James Joyce, Ambrose Bierce, Patricia Grace and Frank Sargeson. Other writers have been mentioned during the unit. Some of them may be well known while others would be new to you. Your school library will have many collections of short stories for you to read.
- Select a Short Story writer. Research the writer's life and reputation as a writer. This should point you towards a consideration of the possible themes that appear in the author's works.
Find at least five stories written by the writer you choose. Read them carefully. Attempt to discover the key themes and issues the writer explores in his or her stories. Write a summary of each story.
Use the headings:
- Plot & Theme.
- Characters & Setting.
- Point of View
as guides for the points you make about each story. This will be brief. Refer to the Achievement Standard Assessment Task instruction sheet for detailed requirements for this task.
- Analyse each story to discover and identify the theme/s that re-occur in your selected author's work.
Your presentation must have a bibliography (a list of the books you referred to when you did your research) attached.
PRESENTATION HINTS:
When you prepare a written presentation of some substance you should consider the best way to present your text and pictures as well the headings and captions. Remember you want to ensure that the person who reads it can see and read the information quickly and easily.
