Assessment
Assessment activity: Design a static image in response to literature
Students translate their ideas using the planning sheet. Use the information to draft their initial sketch, identifying the visual features they will use in their static image to convey the message, theme, mood or character. Begin with the visual elements, ie. graphics, position, proportion, frame, line, etc. Students discuss with a partner the self assessment form, and give each other feedback and the reasons for their choice of elements on the static image to convey their message.
Peer and teacher conferencing
Allow time for frequent buddy conferences re the elements used. Encourage students to refer back to
planning_sheet_filled (RTF 10KB)
. Teacher needs to conference students regularly re their plan and draft. Teacher conference students' explanations and understanding of the elements they have used and their reasons for using these elements. Discuss with students their responses regarding how the visual and verbal elements have combined to convey the meaning, the audience and purpose of their static image.
Writing explanation for static image
Group assessment
Students complete a
group_assessment (RTF 7KB)
activity viewing and critiquing the visual and verbal features of the static image. Discussing:
- Have I used visual and verbal features to make the theme or mood of the text clear to my audience?
- Have I used visual and verbal features to explain my ideas about a character in the text?
Self assessment
Students complete self-assessment of the visual and verbal features included in their static image. Students reflect on their use of these features and their explanation, acknowledging those used effectively and identify their next learning steps.
Assessment guidelines
Throughout the planning and drafting processes have an enlarged copy of the
self_assessment (RTF 2KB)
on display and refer to the assessment criteria frequently.
