Introduction

This is a fascinating text to read as the author Mihi Edwards presents her viewpoint in a straightforward literal manner. Some of her ideas will challenge commonly held perceptions in society, as it is written from the perspective of a young woman struggling to make her way in the world and her inner conflict with her culture and society.

Follow up

Extension work for teachers/students could include visiting a marae to further the cultural experience, speak to kaumatua/whaia (perhaps having them visit the class) to speak of their experiences as a child, or of their own parents' experiences (who will be the same generation as Mihi Edwards). Students could visit the local museum to discover local photographs, exhibits, etc. from the period.
