Featur-ing

Learning task 4: Focus on structuring and linking ideas

Dimensions of effective practice

Learning task

What to notice

Teaching and learning purpose

To support students in developing and demonstrating an understanding of:
• how to use a coherent overall structure for a feature article
• how to connect ideas within paragraphs.

Teaching and learning

Key competency: Thinking

1. To explore various ways a feature article can be organised, ask students to:

2. Examine the structure used in Featur-ing_TheGingaStereotype (Word 25KB) . Students should develop sub headings for each paragraph that summarise the topic covered. [e.g., First paragraph: introducing central idea: ‘gingas’ are unfairly treated].

3. Complete Featur-ing_JigsawActivity (Word 24KB) based on the feature “Eat Up: It’s Got to Be Good For You”. With a partner, students cut up the jigsaw sheet and assemble the six paragraphs into a sequence matching the Featur-ing_StructuredHeadings (Word 22KB) so that a case is developed on the topic of diet and young people. The complete feature article is available in Learning task 5.

4. Point out to students that “Eat Up: It’s Got to Be Good For You” takes a serious approach to the issue that young people need to be more responsible about healthy eating. Students could compare this article with the humorous “The Ginga Stereotype” and consider the information each writer selects to develop their ideas.

5. Before students begin the first draft of their feature articles, ask them to revisit their work in Learning task 3 to help to:
• select the topic and approach for their feature article
• locate information to develop ideas.

6. During the drafting process, students can refer to the Featur-ing_MakingTheRightConnections (Word 28KB) sheet to help them to:
• introduce or explain another point of view
• present an additional point or show a connection
• emphasise a point.

7. Students needing support with developing sentences could use the Featur-ing_WritingFrame ( 41KB) . Some teacher adaptation is required to suit their selected topics.
