English exemplars Year 1 - 10

English Exemplars logo.

The English exemplars are authentic pieces of student work, annotated to illustrate learning, achievement, and quality in relation to the levels in the New Zealand Curriculum.

The purpose is to highlight features that we need to watch for, collect information about, and act on to promote learning. Exemplars help to answer the question, "What is quality work?" so that we can articulate what students can do, and what they need to be able to do next.

The resource includes:

  • 75 written language exemplars, covering the functions of poetic and transactional writing
  • 40 visual language exemplars, covering the functions of viewing and presenting static images and moving images
  • 10 oral language exemplars, covering the functions of speaking and listening (distributed to schools on video: "Speaking and Listening: Interpersonal Speaking: Group Discussion").

Teachers’ notes and a matrix of progress indicators accompany each exemplar.
