Applications are now open for Better Start Literacy Approach | Te Ara Reo Matatini (BSLA) professional support for literacy specialists and teachers of Years 0 - 2.
The BSLA is delivered by the University of Canterbury. It is an integrated approach to developing vocabulary, oral, listening, spelling, writing and reading skills in the first year of learning, utilising the Ready to Read Phonics Plus texts. It focuses on the link between spoken and written language, systematically supporting children’s phonological and phonic awareness, letter-sound knowledge and oral language.

Applications for support for cohort seven close on Friday 17 November 2023.
The Ministry of Education and the University of Canterbury are running two Zoom sessions to share information about the Better Start Literacy Approach. They will explain how to access and use this support, and how to apply for Ministry funding.
