Students in groups to brainstorm-1 (RTF 141KB) and write reasons why they like/dislike poetry. Record responses.
Class discusses the ways in which the voice is used to give meaning by emphasising rhythm, words or phrases and other elements of expression. Teacher to read aloud a selection of poetry.
Discuss with the class: "Poetry is used every day and you are involved" (radio, television). In groups, students discuss and record how they are involved and in what ways. Report back to class.
