  • Darryl [Tama’s best friend] has been killed.
  • Tama needs to grieve and to say goodbye to his friend in a way that’s appropriate for him as a Maori.

WHY DOES THIS CHARACTER FEEL ‘OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE’?

  • Tama feels put down, not understood by pakeha.
  • Feels frustrated – no opportunity to say goodbye his way.

Example: teacher’s response to Tama saying he wants to hongi Darryl: “you should keep your culture and your nose to yourself.”
